England, late 19th century. After the disappearance of the Chimney Sweep, the man who raised her, Nan Sparrow is forced to go to work for Crudd, an evil and unscrupulous exploiter. The life of child chimney sweeps is hard and very dangerous, but Nan is the best of the climbers.
One day, however, she makes a fatal mistake and gets stuck in a chimney. The little girl fears the end has come, but instead she wakes up in pain in an abandoned attic. And she is not alone. Beside her is a mysterious creature, made of ash and coal, that speaks and moves. Together, the little girl and the ‘monster’ will grow up, each saving the life of the other.
The intense and moving story of a friendship and how love can transform loneliness; an inextricable weave of fantasy and reality narrated by an incisive and moving voice.
