Hypatia was a mathematician, astronomer, philosopher, influential political figure, and charismatic teacher. Her prominence incited the envy of Bishop Cyril, leading to her death, and inspired poets and writers throughout history. While celebrated and idealized, she was also often misunderstood. Hypatia was brutally murdered by Christian fanatics, her body dismembered and burned. For the first time, Silvia Ronchey meticulously reconstructs Hypatia’s intellectual and existential journey within the cultural and social context of late antiquity. The book reveals the true image of a woman whose martyrdom continues to illuminate ideological, religious, and literary battles across the ages.
