The story takes place in 1940 during the devastating Blitz of Coventry, where six-year-old Rose Sherbourne is left alone after her parents are killed in a bombing. She is taken in by Elenor Cardew, a kind woman who decides to move to a quiet farm in Cornwall to keep the child safe from the ongoing air raids. However, Rose carries a dangerous secret from her past that puts her life at risk even far from the front lines. To protect her, Elenor seeks help from Jackson St John, a heroic Canadian pilot. Amidst the fear and chaos of World War II, a deep bond forms between them as they work together to shield Rose from those who wish her harm.
