Holes tells the story of Stanley Yelnats, a boy who is wrongfully convicted of stealing a pair of sneakers and sent to Camp Green Lake, a juvenile detention center in the Texas desert. Despite its name, the camp has no lake; instead, the inmates are forced to dig one hole every day, five feet wide and five feet deep, supposedly to “build character”. However, Stanley soon realizes that the Warden is actually looking for a hidden treasure buried a century ago. The novel masterfully intertwines Stanley’s present struggle with the stories of his ancestors and a legendary outlaw, revealing how fate and a family curse link them all together.
