The American Minister to the Court of St James’s, Hiram B. Otis, and his family move into Canterville Castle despite warnings of a ghost. Initially skeptical, they soon encounter the ghost, Sir Simon de Canterville. Unfazed by his attempts to scare them, the Otis family repeatedly outsmarts and humiliates him. The ghost reveals his tragic tale to Virginia, the Otis’s wise daughter, who learns important life lessons from him. She helps Sir Simon find peace by praying for him and accompanying him to the Garden of Death. The story concludes with Virginia marrying the Duke of Cheshire, having gained a deeper understanding of life, death, and love through her experience with the ghost.
