Analysis and Comparison of Sustainable and Conventional Websites

The web and websites consume much more energy and resources than users are aware of. The Internet is very polluting and burdensome, which is why there has been a trend in recent years to create sustainable websites. Unfortunately, not many people are aware of this issue, so I decided to address this topic in my bachelor’s thesis.

The first part of this bachelor’s thesis is dedicated to the explanation of the problem of environmental pollution due to the Internet, the trend of creating sustainable websites that began in response to this issue, and the theoretical aspects of designing sustainable websites. As a Graphic Design student, I focused on graphic elements that make a website more sustainable: choice of typography, colors, photos, usage of animations and videos, etc.

In the second part of the bachelor’s thesis I analyze an already existing sustainable website Organic Basics. This section breaks down which graphic elements are the ones that make this website more sustainable than comparable websites. For comparison, I chose the company, for which I also designed a website as the product for my bachelor’s thesis and then also redesigned it in order to make it sustainable. When designing my product I mainly relied on the findings from the theoretical part of the bachelor’s thesis. Of course, here too I focused on graphic elements.

The main hypothesis on which this bachelor’s thesis is based is that by choosing the right design decisions we can significantly help to reduce the size of the website. How much emissions a particular website emits can be measured with the online carbon calucator on https://websiteemissions.com, which I also used to measure the emissions of the selected sustainable website and the website I made for comparison and redesigning.

By redesigning the website according to the criteria of sustainable websites, I believe that my product is more sustainable and environmentally friendly than the original website. I hope that this thesis will contribute to greater knowledge and understanding of this topic.
